Lunar New Year is celebrated by many cultures around the world when December quickly transitions into January. It marks the beginning of the new moon cycle into the glorious new year. For many it’s a coming together of family and dear friends as a ritual under the moon to honor the ancestors of the past. For myself, it was always to comb my hair elegantly and not to bicker with my little brother. Red envelopes with money and treats where handed out from the elders, we felt rich for one night.

We cook grand feasts, burn incense and bow to our relatives whose spirits have gone into the next life. We leave front doors open so they can come and enjoy the evening and leave the back doors free so they can can swiftly depart after a union with their loved ones. Before they leave I whisper a reflection of “I love and miss you. Watch over us this year and we’ll see you again.”
